Faith, Practice and Study are very crucial in developing a brilliant and powerful life state instrumental in gaining victory over ourselves, our circumstances and challenges that we confront in our day to day lives…Thus we must Have Faith in the Gohonzon and we should Practice chanting for ourselves and for others and have a complete understanding of the philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism by studing it.
Faith: It means believing in the limitless power of the Gohonzon and teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. When we continuously strenghthen our belief we began to transform loss into gain and evil into good by calling forth the life state of Buddhahood from within.
Practice: Practice is divided into two- Practice of oneself and Practice for others. Practice for oneself means to chant “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” and do Gongyo both morning and evening prayers ourselves. Practice for others means to teach people to chant ‘Nam Myoho Renge Kyo’, help them to gain better understanding of Nichiren Buddhism and thus deepen their conviction in the Gohonzon, so that they may create fulfilling lives. When we attain victory and happiness we are naturally inspired to share that conviction with others.
Study: Study means to understand the philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism by reading ‘The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin; and writings, essays, speeches and lectures of our mentor, Daisaku Ikeda, not just as a theor, but with our very life itself, i.e.
apply in our daily life.
Study gives us confidence that thus practice is valid and it helps us to understand the basic idea of the philosophy and how our efforts will bring us result through our practice. Nichiren Daishonin states: “Both our practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only single sentence or phrase.”
President Ikeda explains: “The path of correct faith and practice is fraught with obstacles and difficulties. Unless one has a solid grounding in study, one will start having doubts when problems arise. By deepening our understanding of this philosophy, we also develop the correct attitude to face these obstacles and eventually become happy. Similarly, when talking to others, about Buddhism, study helps to give correct and convincing explanation about the philosophy.”
Faith is the most fundamental form of Buddhism. Faith leads to practice and practice leads to study and study deepens our faith. As a BSG member I have experience myself when I study from value creation book or from Gosho books, It deepens my understanding to the philosophy and I started practicing this philosophy more vigorously and as a result have deepen my faith n Gohonzon that I will surely attain Victory. So I would suggest everyone to practice daily and help others to gain understanding of this philosophy. Encourage people to study and have faith in the Gohonzon.
